Believe…

A devotion by Trevor Bradley

Faith to Live By, A (PB)Believe… I am seeking the LORD to teach me a whole new way life.  The word of the Lord says that I am called to live a life of faith. Faith in Him pleases Him.  This I want to do…

I want GOD to alter, change and rearrange the order of things in my life so that I might know what it is to take HIM at HIS word for everything pertaining to life.

3 words. 3 people. 3 very different set of circumstances.  They are: BARRENNESS, BATTLE, and BLEEDING.

How Long O LordBARRENESS:  Abraham and Sarah receive a promise. Years pass and still no fulfillment comes.  They delay God’s answer by getting personally involved… enter Ishmael… at 100 years old and with Sarah in her 90’s, GOD answers and makes good on HIS word.

BATTLE:  Joshua  is fighting the Amorites – the day is drawing to a close and Joshua realizes that if they don’t finish the enemy off, they might come back later to attack Israel yet again.  He prays an outrageous prayer (Joshua 10 vs 12 & 13), and God stops the sun & the moon in their tracks so that he can finish the job…  GOD gives the victory.

BLEEDING:  A woman with a physical condition.. she tried everything and spent all her money to get healed. She is an outcast, alone and ostracized…hears of JESUS..if only she could touch HIS prayer shawl….does and gets healed.

The word says that my GOD, has not changed from the GOD who was back then.  He can and still wants to do the impossible, if we will take HIM AT HIS WORD AND BELIEVE HIS PROMISE.  You and I are His covenant children.  And he has covenanted to deliver on His word to us.  Why? Simply because of who He is and that He loves us.

You may be in barren-land today. The land of nothingness. Death. Fruitlessness.
Or you may be in the heat of a battle and time is running out for you. You have fought and fought but you just cannot ‘finish’ the enemy off, and you are weary.  You my be bleeding.  You have spent your all to find your desired ‘wholeness’ , but to no avail.  You know loneliness and what it’s like to be marginalized, and life is being drained from you daily.

God stands before us today and says to us ‘I have not changed. My arm has not weakened. I still do what you believe to be the IMPOSSIBLE even though you might think that your ‘ask’ is outrageous like that of Joshua’s..ask of ME..trust my word’.

(Mark 9 vs 23): If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes. If you can believe… Will you today??

The God who Speaks

A Gospel Project small group bible study  by Mike Budler

Ed Stetzer, Lifeway General Editor, and Trevin Wax, Managing Editor, combine to write “The God Who Speaks, The (Workbook)God Who Speaks” for adults as part of their popular series – The Gospel Project.  The small group workbook is a biblical theology going from Genesis to Revelation as well as a systematic theology focusing on the work of Jesus Christ as found in both the Old and New Testaments.

The editors teach us how to respond to the Word of God as we live in a fallen world as unbelievers and also how we can respond to God’s Word once God redeems us.  In the introduction to The Gospel Project for Adults, we read that “the scriptures are a story revealed – it is one story of redemption through Jesus Christ.  The Gospel saves us, and when we encounter Jesus in the pages of Scripture, the Gospel works on us, transforming us into His image.  We become God’s Gospel Project.”

The editors speak of core values for the workbook:

  • It is rich in theology but not dry
  • It is Christ-centered
  • It is story-focused
  • It is mission-driven

The book also gives great small group tips: make sure that all participants have a workbook and that you have extras in case newcomers to the group need a copy; make sure that the group facilitator is trained and has a “missional attitude” in his life; that the group prays regularly for the Great Commission be carried out by each small group member; and that the group finds a Gospel Project to be done in the community or abroad (Acts 1:8).  Each chapter includes devotions for each individual to be read during the week and also group discussion questions for the facilitator.  Contributors include Tim Chandler, Timothy Keller, Tullian Tchividjian, John Piper & Wayne Grudem.

Allow God to be His Gospel Project – Begin with “The God Who Speaks.”  He will be glorified and you will grow in your faith!

THIRD DAY: THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 22-24

Third Day, The (Luke 22-24) (Comic Book)This book is the first in a range of short graphic-novel-style books faithfully illustrating the unadorned text of the gospel of Luke. The Third Day is Easter retold with drama and passion. Fast paced and superbly drawn, this is a fresh and faithful Gospel resource sure to engage a new generation.  It has a gritty, contemporary feel to it that is far removed from the clean, bright, graphic versions of the Bible already available for younger children.

This resource will introduce the biblical account of Easter to teens and young adults who enjoy reading illustrated graphic media.  The Third Day covers the Gospel of Luke chapters 22 to 24, the betrayal, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ, using the NIV version.  The spectacular illustrations are engaging and dramatic and they draw you into the comic with their authenticity and detail.

GOSPEL-CENTERED MARRIAGE: TIM CHESTER

Gospel-Centred MarriageMost of what the Bible has to say about marriage does not come flagged up under a heading of marriage. Its not just the famous marriage passages that shape a gospel-centred marriage, but the whole Bible-story of Gods good creation, humanitys wicked rebellion and Gods gracious redemption.

To understand why marriages struggle as they all do, we need to understand the nature of our sin. To make marriages work, we need to understand how to apply the truth about God and His salvation. This study guide on Christian marriage focuses on how the Gospel shapes the practical realities of everyday life.

Author Tim Chester lifts the lid on many of the common pressure points that modern couples face, and shows how a proper understanding of the Gospel can shape a response.

Moments with a Mom: Encore of the first-time mom (part 1)

Candice

Candice is a busy wife to Matt and mom of Noah (5) and Tyler (3 going on 21). Candice also works part-time at our Rosebank Store of Christian Book Discounters. In her spare time Candice writes for her own blog and is a travel consultant.

Instructing a Child's Heart AudioOn Sunday, I watched Noah walk into his new Sunday School class. I’m not really the emotional type but he’s moved up into the bigger section and goes to a separate building to Tyla so he’s with all the primary school aged children – Grade R to Grade 6. I saw my boy walk into that hall, the shortest little guy by about 5 feet (I’m pretty sure that grade 6 boys are giants these days and this mommy is having heart palpitations), turn around and wave and say “bye mommy!” ~ just like that. And instantly, I was that new mom again. That unsure, cautious first time mom. Actually, I AM a first time mom. I’ve never parented a 5 year old before so yes. First time mom, it is…

What the Bible Teaches About Christian PI think it’s become more prevalent in my life because my brother and my sister-in-love are having their first baby next month. I can remember being a pregnant mommy and waiting for the baby to arrive and while Lindsey (my sister in love) is just beginning her journey, I’m entering a new phase of mine. That’s always quite scary. Just like giving birth and entering motherhood is life-changing, seeing the “birth” of your children into another stage is emotionally jarring as you birth a new phase of your parenting journey.

Lindsey ~ the first time mommy of a newborn.

Candice ~ the first time mommy of a 5 year old. Same but different.

Having said that, I sat back and thought about my experience so far so here are some thoughts on what I’ve learnt so far. I don’t profess to be the perfect mother by any means but there are points in this blessing-filled, crying-enveloped, hug-infested, love-dosed journey where these have meant a lot to me. I’m not saying I’ve got it right because I definitely don’t and my way isn’t the only way, that’s for sure – but here goes.

  • Everybody will tell you “It goes so quickly, enjoy every stage and every minute.” Yes, it does go quickly but I promise you, you won’t enjoy every moment. It’s just not possible. You’ll have days where you feel like you’re going to fall apart and you do, in a big way. There will be days where you will hate every second. That’s ok. It’s not meant to be easy and it’s ok to admit that.
  • You’ll hear “sleep when the baby sleeps” – I have never met  a mother who’s got this right. I never did. If my daughter was sleeping, she’d think that 15 minutes at a time was about enough. In that time, I’ve just actually re-heated my cup of tea (yes I’m still in my pajamas) and I’m about to drink it while sterilising the bottles. Before I can even vaguely think about even sitting down, let alone sleep, my child is awake. Moms operate on minimal sleep with a smile most days. You’ll be totally fine!
  • The other day I was in a baby shop and I was floored. I only had my last baby nearly 4 years ago and there are another 3546 gadgets you can buy for your child since then! You honestly don’t need all that stuff ~ your child will grow up and be the most amazing, happy child even if you don’t have the best baby gym with original Frozen characters that sings Do You Wanna Build A Snowman? everytime you push Olaf’s nose. Noah’s favourite toy was an old apple box from the fruit shop. Go figure.
  • Pick your battles. With your kids and with your man. You’re going to be so tired so you can end up grilling your husband about something totally ridiculous (been there, done that) and when you look back, IT IS completely ridiculous. Before you rage, take a step back and think about it. With your kids too. I’ve learnt this the hard way.
  • Work at your own pace. My son gave up his dummy at 5 years old. So what? I had loads of people tell me that he’s way too old to still sleep with a dummy. Hey, he only had it at night and it lived under his pillow. The minute he went to bed, out it came and he slept like that. In my eyes, that’s not a big deal. In his time, Noah said “Mom I don’t need this dummy. We can give it to the elf babies.” And he and his sister left their dummy and bottle in the garden for the elves to fetch. Forcing him to do it earlier wouldn’t have achieved anything except he’d have been younger. Just because the world dictates milestones, doesn’t mean you have to enforce those with your kids. Your child will develop and grow how he/she is supposed to.
  • Trust your mommy intuition. It’s basically always right.
  • Accept help. Of course, everyone wants to be super hero mom but you can’t do it alone. You’ll burn out. Take help and accept it gladly whenever it’s offered, from people you trust.
  • Don’t be hard on yourself. Your child will never be like anyone else’s and just because your child isn’t sleeping through the night at 8 months, doesn’t mean that’s your fault. Comparing your child to anyone else’s doesn’t achieve anything but mom-stress. What messes with our heads the most is how we think it’s supposed to be. Be confident in the way you choose to parent your babies.

Book Review: Stronger than the Sword

By Faith Cook

Stronger than the SwordThough the characters in this novel are fictitious, they represent the truth and their lives are interwoven with historical figures such as John Bunyan. Set during a time of great persecution, the focus is on a typical family living in Somerset at that time. The lesson is clear: we do not fear those who kill the body, but must have faith that is ‘stronger than the sword’.

A farmer, searching the moors at night for his son, missing after a skirmish in the English Civil War, stumbles across a Royalist soldier lying severely injured in a ditch. His decision to help the man will have surprising repercussions in years to come, both for his own family and for the stranger whose life was saved at great personal cost to his rescuers.

Set in times when to refuse to conform to the forms of worship imposed by the state was to risk fines or imprisonment, the circumstances of the lives of the central characters are set in the context of these stirring historical events.

These people are representative of the countless numbers of Christians worldwide who, down the centuries, have demonstrated a faith in the living God which is stronger than the sword – a faith that prevails even though a civil power may attempt to crush and annihilate it.  As such, their example challenges Christians today to remain faithful to the truths of Scripture, cost what it may and however subtle the forms in which persecution may be presented.

Valentines Day is not just for 1 day a year…

Here are some great books to help you to build a Christ-Centered marriage every day of the year.

The Meaning of Marriage: Timothy Keller

Meaning of Marriage (Riverhead)(PB)Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that your spouse is there to help you realize your potential; that marriage does not mean forever, but merely for now; and that starting over after a divorce is the best solution to seemingly intractable marriage issues. But these modern-day assumptions are wrong. Timothy Keller shows marriage to be a glorious relationship that is also misunderstood and mysterious. The Meaning of Marriage offers instruction on how to have a successful marriage, and is essential reading for anyone who wants to know God and love more deeply in this life.  This book shows everyone—Christians, skeptics, singles, longtime married couples, and those about to be engaged—the vision of what marriage should be according to the Bible.

What Did You Expect PBWhat did you Expect: Paul Tripp

Marriage, according to Scripture, will always involve two flawed people living with each other in a fallen world. Yet, in counsellor Paul Tripp’s professional experience, the majority of couples enter marriage with far different expectations. These unrealistic expectations leave them unprepared for the day-to-day realities of married life.  This unique book introduces a biblical and practical approach to those realities that is rooted in God’s faithfulness and Scripture’s teaching on sin and grace.  It presents six practical commitments that give shape and momentum to such a lifestyle. These commitments ranging from “We will honestly face our sin, weakness, and failure” to “We will change our agenda” and “We will protect our relationship” will equip couples to develop a thriving, grace-based marriage in all circumstances and seasons of their relationship.

You and Me ForeverYou and Me Forever: Francis Chan & Lisa Chan

Marriage is great, but it’s not forever. It’s until death do us part. Then come eternal rewards or regrets depending on how we spent our lives.  In his latest book, Francis Chan joins together with his wife Lisa to address the question many couples wonder at the altar: “How do I have a great marriage”?

Setting aside typical topics on marriage, Francis and Lisa dive into Scripture to understand what it means to have a relationship that satisfies the deepest parts of our souls.  This book will radically shift the way we see one of the most important relationships in our life.  Jesus was right. We have it all backwards. The way to have a great marriage is by not focusing on marriage.  Whether you are single, dating or married, You and Me Forever will help you discover the adventure that you were made for and learn how to thrive in it.

CBD PRICE: 200.00

This Momentary Marriage (Paperback Edition)This Momentary Marriage: John Piper

The chasm between the biblical vision of marriage and the common human conception is, and has always been, gargantuan. Reflecting on over forty years of matrimony, John Piper exalts the biblical meaning of marriage over its emotion, exhorting couples to keep their covenant as a display of Christ’s covenant-keeping love for the church. He aims to lift the church’s low view of marriage to something infinitely greater, namely, a vision of Jesus’s unswerving allegiance to and affection for his bride.

This Momentary Marriage unpacks the biblical vision, its unexpected contours, and its weighty implications for married, single, divorced, and remarried alike.

God’s Tapestry

By Tim Challies

God's Power to Change Your Life (PB)Have you ever compared the front and back of a tapestry? The front of a tapestry is art. In the hands of a skilled weaver it displays incredible artistry and fine detail. The world’s best art museums collect the world’s best tapestries and display them there as examples of a rare but beautiful form of art.

The back of a tapestry is a mess. A tapestry is made by weaving together different-colored threads, and the images and designs are created by the interplay between the different colors and textures. What is clear on the front is opaque on the back. The back shows something of the image, but it looks more like a child’s attempt than a master’s: it lacks nuance and clarity and detail. Where the front is smooth, the back is covered in knots and loose ends.

We are meant to see and admire the front of the tapestry, not the back, and this has often served as an illustration of the truths of Romans 8:28: That God promises to use every single event in our lives to bring about good.  Though I have often heard Joni Eareckson Tada use the illustration, I believe it originated with Corrie Ten Boom and her poem “The Master Weaver’s Plan.”

“Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow; / And I in foolish pride / Forget He sees the upper / And I the underside.”

It serves as an effective illustration for the truth that for now we get to see only the underside of all God is weaving together in this world, while clinging to the promise that someday we will see the upper side and marvel at what he has been doing.    Read More…

Equip Book of the Month: February

The Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler

Explicit Gospel, The (PB)You know you know it… But then again, maybe you don’t. Even if you go to church, it doesn’t mean that you are being exposed to the gospel explicitly. Sure, most people talk about Jesus, and about being good and avoiding bad, but the gospel message simply isn’t there – at least not in its specificity and its fullness. Inspired by the needs of both the over-churched and the unchurched, and bolstered by the common neglect of the explicit gospel within Christianity, popular pastor Matt Chandler writes to remind us what is of first and utmost importance – the gospel.

“If you only read one book this year, make it this one. It’s that important.”—Rick Warren, Pastor, Saddleback Church

“This book, like the gospel itself, is clarifying, convicting, comforting, and compelling all at the same time. I wholeheartedly invite you to read it, to be overwhelmed by the mercy and majesty of God in the gospel, and then to spend your life making this gospel explicit in every facet of your life and to every corner of the earth!” —David Platt, President, International Mission Board

“That the gospel is not clearly taught in classic liberalism is disheartening but not surprising. That frequently the gospel is not taught in evangelical congregations is both disquieting and surprising. Evangelicals will not deny the gospel, but they may assume it while talking about everything else – and that is tragic. Matt Chandler issues a robust call to make the gospel an explicit and central part of our preaching, and takes pains to show what that looks like. Amen and Amen.” – D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

TWO GREAT TITLES TO ADD TO YOUR BOOK SHELF

GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR : TIM CHESTER

Good News to the Poor (Crossway)Help them or tell them?
Be like Jesus or talk about Jesus?
Social action or gospel proclamation?

Quite often we find ourselves gravitating toward one of those modes over the other, at times going so far as to pit word against deed, as if the two were mutually exclusive. Yet Good News to the Poor shows us how both are integrated in the biblical vision of mission so that we may become both evangelists and activists? Christians who talk the talk and who walk the walk.

Collected Writings on Scripture : D.A. Caron

Collected Writings on ScriptureGod’s Word has always had enemies, but in recent years the inspiration and authority of Scripture have been attacked with renewed vigor. Respected scholar D. A. Carson has written widely on the nature of Scripture over the past thirty years, and here presents a timely collection of his work in two parts.

PART 1: Carson selects essays written on such themes as how to interpret the Bible, recent developments in the doctrine of Scripture, unity and diversity in the New Testament, and redaction criticism. Presenting a theologically balanced and confessional perspective, Carson defines the terms of a number of debates, critiques interpretive methods and theories, and suggests positive guidelines for future action.

PART 2:  Presents critical reviews of nine books dealing with the inspiration and authority of Scripture. Though substantial in content, Carson’s detailed reviews will foster careful thought and perspective in those who are relatively new to the debates surrounding biblical inspiration and authority.

Let’s be Frank: Thought for the Day

Frank Retief 2

Frank Retief was pastor at St James Church Cape Town for 31 years, having planted the church in 1968 with his wife Beulah.  He became the Presiding Bishop of the Church of England in South Africa until he retired in 2010.  Frank remains active in ministry through preaching, teaching, pastoral work & writing, and has authored a number of books.

Sustainer

Matthew 6 v 26:  Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, yet your Heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Our Lord appeals to the birds of the air, the lilies of the field and also the grass of the field for one purpose. To remind us that the Creator of the world is also the sustainer. He keeps it going by meeting all its needs. Then Jesus reminds us that this great creator and sustainer is our Father and furthermore in creational terms, we are much more valuable to God than the rest of creation.  He will sustain us as well. Therefore, says Jesus, in Matthew 6 v 34 “Do not worry about tomorrow.” Of course we all know how we fail at this point, because we are given to anxiety in our fragile and precarious world. But notice Jesus does not say, do not plan for tomorrow, or work for tomorrow, or make provisions for tomorrow. All these things we should do if we can. But there will always be something about tomorrow that is not in our control.  So having done all we can about tomorrow, we should trust our Father in Heaven. “Your Heavenly Father knows that you need them” said Jesus speaking of daily necessities.  Therefore we can come in prayer with confidence and pray for our daily bread from the One who is the Sustainer of the Universe, that very one who is also our Heavenly Father.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank you for the caring words of Jesus Christ our Lord. We pray for that carefree and confident spirit that will always trust in you. Deliver us from carelessness and increase our confidence in you. Amen

Book Review: God’s not dead

Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty – you’ve watch the movie, now read the book.

God's Not DeadThe goal of God’s Not Dead: Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty is straightforward: to help readers develop a faith that is real and credible and strong enough to help others find faith in God. To that end, Rice Broocks outlines a roadmap that guides seekers to acknowledge the most basic truths of Christianity:

  • There is overwhelming and exciting evidence for God’s existence
  • The God who exists is indeed the God of the Bible
  • God has revealed his nature through his Son, Jesus Christ

As shown during the movie, this is the original book on which the main character bases much of his debate points with the atheistic professor. Persuasive arguments crafted with tools borrowed from logic, science, and philosophy, as well as scripture, solidify the faith of the Christian reader and provide starting points for discussions with sceptics. With clear, easy-to-follow explanations of key concepts and controversies, God’s Not Dead is apologetics for the twenty-first century, presented in layman’s terms. Readers will be empowered not only to talk about their own faith with confidence but to lead others to a relationship with Jesus.
