Injustice

“It’s not Fair”…….

All of us have experienced injustice at some time or another in our lives.  Sometimes it is us who have been grieved and sometimes we haveWhiter Than SnowTotal Forgiveness (Kendall)Walking with God through Pain and Suffering been the ones who have been unjust towards another person.  Whatever end you are on, it hurts.  Relationships and feelings are damaged and need to be restored.  Sometimes it is the injustices that we see in the world around us that are hard to bear. David Murray provides some words of wisdom about life and why it is sometimes just not fair…

Coffee with Sylvia : The Fight by John White

Sylvia Bester Picture

Sylvia Bester has been part of the CBD family since August 2009 after retiring from her career in banking.  She has always loved books (the smell and feel of them). Sylvia is a Social Media junkie, passionate about people and how she can make a difference in their lives by encouraging them to read good books.

Last week we talked about New Year’s Resolutions and de-cluttering your spiritual life.  The Fight is a  practical yet profound book the fightwhich is very easy to read, and it will help assist you with taking a re-stock of your spiritual life and getting it back on track. It also addresses the real life issues which we as Christians wrestle with, such as “Am I spending enough time in prayer?” , “Is my faith at the core of my Christianity?”,  “Do I give in to my temptations?” and ” How do I organize my time?”

This book reminds us of the joys and triumphs of Christian Living and of the eternal God who loves us. It is only by a fight against the “world” that we can achieve the goal which is set for us.  The Price is R75.00 each.

New Year’s Resolutions …….

De-Cluttering your Spiritual Life

Happy New Year everyone …. we at CBD trust that 2014 will be a blessed and fulfilled one for you.  Have you made lots of New Year’s True SpiritualityResolutions that you probably won’t keep much after the end of the month?  Here is one resolution I challenge you to try and keep – we are always being bombarded with articles and talks on how to simplify our lives, de-clutter our homes or take an inventory of our stress levels.  What about our Spiritual Lives?  Are they healthy?  Do we need to assess them going into a new year.

Hear is a great article by our friend Jenny who encourages us to de-clutter our Spiritual lives and gives practical tips on how to do this.  She also reminds us that whilst it is good to de-clutter our physical homes and look after our bodies, we need to remember that this life is fleeting.  Therefore we need to take care of our eternal home as much if not more.:-

Christmas Music Review

Candice

Candice is a busy wife to Matt and mom of Noah (5) and Tyler (3 going on 21).  Candice also works part-time at our Rosebank Store of Christian Book Discounters.  In her spare time she writes her own blog & is a travel consultant.

Steve Curtis Chapman & Keith and Kirsten Getty

Christmas music can either classy or corny. Outside of the traditional Christmas carols, contemporary Christian artists are writing amazing Christmas albums. I had a listen to two of them and here are my views on them

Steven Curtis Chapman ~ JOY!

I’m a HUGE SCC fan. I have been since he started out and my dad used to play me “The Great Adventure” every time we drove Joy (CD)somewhere ~ I must’ve been 9 year old and I’ve followed him since then. This is his second Christmas album ~ the first being “All I Really Want For Christmas.” This new one, titled Joy, is a great mix of traditional and original, self-penned material. It comes with the typical Curtis Chapman acoustic arrangements and brilliant versions of traditional Christmas tracks like What Child Is This? And We Three Kings. He features the African Children’s Choir on 4 tracks and he’s co-written with his son Caleb on the album as well. If you’re already a Steven Curtis Chapman fan, this will not disappoint. If you aren’t really familiar with him, then this will be a great discovery for all of you who are fans of acoustic, soft rock artists. His honest, Christ-centered lyrical content and relatable singing style will hit right to the heart of what Christmas is really about.

The Gettys ~ Joy! An Irish Christmas

If you’re a lover of everything traditional, than this is the album for you. It reminded me a little of the soundtracks to Lord of the Dance or Riverdance ~ that’s how strong the Irish influence is on this album. The Getty’s, popular writers of modern day hymns including In Christ Alone, hail from Ireland and have made an album based on their roots and its musical style.Joy - An Irish Christmas (CD)

On the inside leaflet, there is a personal note from the couple on where each song originated and how they came to record it as it is. There is a mix of traditional and original Christmas music on this collection, all with a strong Irish flavour. They’ve co-written three songs with Stuart Townend. I loved “Carol of The Bells” which features an Irish jig half way through the track and their version of “Joy To The World” is beautiful.

Again, if you’re a Getty’s fan already, this will be a wonderful addition to your collection. Hauntingly beautiful, with Kristyn Getty’s voice so clear and enchanting. If you haven’t had contact with any of the Getty’s music before, but you’re a fan of traditional Irish music, this album would be a wonderful gift to yourself.

Twice the amount of musical JOY! this Christmas!

The Godward Struggle of Ordinary Parenting

Let’s face it, parenting is hard work a lot of the time, and there are days when we would all secretly wonder why we had kids at all?  We look around us at other families, magazines and commercials showing perfect babies & toddlers playing contentedly at their mom’s feet, or teenagers who aren’t moody & rebellious and wonder where we are going wrong?  The answer is that we are not.  Day to day parenting is hard work and monotonous (especially when you have to say something ten times before it is done).  But God uses just these sorts of days to help teach us parents lessons as we strive to grow these little people into Godly men and women.  Read here for an encouraging article on parenting.

The Power of Giving & Receiving this Christmas

 Everything in Moderation ……

Christmas is only 14 days away and all the shops are sparkling and twinkling with decorations, not to mention the lure of all those items you didn’t know you wanted until you saw them.  It is hard not to get caught up in the culture of materialism and excess at the best of times, but particularly so around Christmas time.  If you are a parent of children (no matter what their age), this seems even more so.

Our good friend Jenny has written a great article on how to keep Christmas real and grounded for our kids.  Click here to read more…. http://www.se7en.org.za/2009/12/22/sunday-snippet-giving-and-receiving-the-parables

Advent Devotions for the Christmas Season

Sylvia Bester Picture

Shock and Awe – Ian Coffey

You know how we all love Advent calendars especially the ones with chocolates!

There something about the element of surprise when we “open” a window and find a treat.Shock and Awe

In this advent book beginning on the 1st December and going right through to the 6th of January we find a spiritual treat every day as it reminds us of how Jesus birth was met with wonder, astonishment and even incredulity.

Ian describes God’s method of granting us His Grace as shock and awe. Shock that a heavenly king was to come to earth as a lowly baby and Awesomeness of the way God delivers on his promises time after time.

We begin with the story of God’s promise and covenant with Abraham in Genesis and end with John’s vision of the new heaven and earth in Revelation.

Unlike other books that once read are either passed on (hopefully) or shelved this book is one that can be re-read next year and in fact every advent as the daily readings from scripture are eternal.

What I enjoyed too were the anecdotes, snippets and quotes from other Christian writers and from the author himself which just add that little bit extra to an already challenging yet comforting little book. See the story in the postscript about the dead soldier …….

There is also a short study guide at the back of the book which is helpful and can only serve to encourage either individuals or even a small group.

If this gem is not on your” books to read” list it should be, better still buy an extra copy and “bless” someone with it. It’s far more practical and uplifting than an advent calendar.

Our normal price is R100, but we are offering this book at R70 for the month of December only.  Don’t miss it…….

Be Radical ….. Say Yes!!

What is so radical about following Jesus?

That is the sub-title of New York Times Best Selling Author David Platt’s RADICAL.

In this small-group Bible study, Pastor Platt challenges the notion that Christians can follow Jesus without giving up our old way of life. Redeemed by radical grace, we are called to a radical abandonment of our agenda, to a radical strategy for making disciples, and to a radical vision for being on mission.

When Jesus called His disciples, they left everything and followed Him. They gave up careers, possessions, and families. Everything that was safe and familiar. Jesus expects no less of His followers today.radical small group study

Jesus is calling you and your church out of comfortable Christianity to take up your cross and follow Him and to embrace Him as your richest treasure. He wants is to feed the poor and reach the lost and to live for the glory of God. That is radical!

So the questions to ask ourselves:

  1. How are we following the world and the enemy rather than our Savior?
  2. Is the new self following the Spirit of God or our flesh?
  3. Is God asking you to give up your career? Certain possessions? Family?

Be RADICAL and say YES.

Nehemiah – Kelly Minter

I started Nehemiah just after I’d had quite a big birthday in my life: the big 3-0. I felt like I was starting to be more comfortable with who I was, who God has moulded me into over my life. I’ll admit, after having done a few Beth Moore studies, I was excited to side track and tackle another study by someone, close to Beth Moore herself, but who wasn’t Beth Moore. Just to get another angle and perspective on scripture from another source. Let me tell you ~ I wasn’t comfortable with myself for very long… in a good way!

Kelly Minter blew me away. Her heart is evident throughout this entire study. She’s real, she family-oriented even though she’s never married, and she just shines honesty, integrity and commitment to the Saviour. Her study on Nehemiah is her third small group study (Ruth and No Other Gods being her first two) but the first of her studies that comes with a DVD set.Watching her DVD sessions, was like having a cup of tea with a old friend. It’s almost as if she climbs onto your couch and gets real with you every session. Every week, she’s included a recipe and encourages groups to share a meal during their study time together.

Nehemiah is obviously based on the biblical book of the same name and journeys into your heart to find out what it is that God is breaking it for. Nehemiah’s heart was broken for his people so much so that he left the comfort of his Persian palace to supervise the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem and restore the pride and dignity of his generation. Kelly Minter asks the question: What has God broken your heart for and what are you doing about it? Yes, it might lead you out of your comfort zone. Yes, it might lead you into being transparent about personal struggles and past mistakes. Yes, it might mean sacrifice and hardship BUT whatever happened in your past, and how ever badly you hurt, God can use your repaired life but breakable heart to be Jesus in an area where you feel that He’s leading you to. Nothing can compare to walking in God’s will for your life, in the area He’s specifically called you to, and with the people He’s called you to serve. That’s what Kelly’s main lesson is throughout this study.

Throughout the study, Kelly gives clips into a mission trip she took into the Amazon with her family, essentially highlighting the area and people she feels God’s broken her heart for. She’s real, she’s transparent and she’s just a blessing to walk through this study with. If you’re a Beth Moore fan, and you’re scared to take a risk and try another writer, here’s a little endorsement for Miss Minter ~ Beth Moore chose this specific study as her 2012 online summer bible study.

What I learned:-

  • Learn that what makes you weep and what breaks your heart ~ be that poverty, be that missions, be that human trafficking, be that the AIDS crisis, be that orphans;
  • God has placed specifically in your make up, in order for you to come along side people in those very struggles, even if you don’t feel qualified enough to do so.
  • Having a breakable heart means your reliance on the King is greater, and your belief in His plan for you, is greater than any plans you had for your life.
