The period of the Judges was a time of turmoil and upheaval for ancient Israel. The recurring cycles of rebellion, anarchy, judgment, repentance, renewal, and occasional rest took its toll on the people and the land. Yet God was at work, raising up judges who were the spiritual and national leaders during this volatile era of history.

Today we have many questions about what was happening during this epoch of ancient history, including why God allowed certain things to take place, especially the violence and bloodshed. Nevertheless, there are many lessons for the 21st century believer here – about leadership, pleasing God, and the life of faith.

It is a joy to bring these previously unpublished notes to you in the form of an Old Testament commentary. As always, my dad’s approach is one of preparing ‘seed for the sower and bread for the eater’ (2 Corinthians 9:10). You will find food for your soul here but also many seed thoughts and ideas that can be further developed into helpful truths and insights about God and his purposes for you, the church, and God’s world.
